Job Summary:

Nature of Work:

The College of Nursing has an opening for full-time (1.0 FTE) Bilingual Dental Assistant I position within its federally qualified community health center, Sheridan Health Services (SHS), located in southwest Denver, CO (zip code: 80236).

Clinic Description:

Sheridan Health Services is a multi-site, nurse-managed federally qualified community health center, funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration Bureau of Primary Healthcare; and is a collaborative effort between the College of Nursing and the Sheridan School District. There are now 52 employees at two convenient locations to serve community health needs primarily for residents of Arapahoe, Denver and Jefferson counties. A Youth Health Clinic is located in the Sheridan School District Administration building. The Family Health Clinic is located in southwest Denver on the Fort Logan campus and provides services to adults and children, 65% of whom identify at Latinx, and 42% of whom are best served in another language, with Spanish being the predominant second language. Services offered include primary care across the lifespan; prenatal and postpartum, gynecology, dentistry, pharmacy, behavioral health, and outpatient substance abuse treatment. Sheridan Health Services is a Patient-Centered Medical Home, and as such, we uphold a model of care that places the patient at the center, incorporating the values and beliefs of the patient in all decision-making. We extend the reach of the clinic through public health outreach where nursing students provide community outreach, health education, and home visitation services.

Supervision Received:

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Dental Program Director.

Supervision Exercised:

No supervision is exercised.

Examples of Work Performed:
  • Assists dentists, dental hygienists, and dental care II positions during various treatment procedures.
  • Bilingual in English and another language. Communicating clinical terminology to patients and colleagues.
  • Assists Dental students in all specialized areas of four-handed dentistry, which includes, but is not limited to, surgical, periodontal, restorative, and all other related procedures. Patient preparation and positioning; clinical area preparation for the treatment of patients.
  • Prepares specialized instrument set-ups for faculty, residents, and dental students to be used during dental patient treatment. Inspects appropriate instruments/tools for good condition/working order.
  • Performs appropriate aseptic and sterilization techniques.
  • Performs dental intraoral and extraoral radiographs using the appropriate technique, x-ray equipment, and safety equipment. Mounts and identifies radiographic films.
  • Performs routine administrative work in support of the clinic such as:
    • Electronic Health Record input and data reporting.
    • Answers phone calls and schedules appointments for both clinic locations.
    • Collects payments from patients for services provided and makes changes where needed.
    • Reconciles change bank daily and submits daily deposit and deposit reconciliation reports.
    • Obtains pre-authorizations for insurance companies.
    • Aids with the preparation of claims for insurance payers.
    • Verifies financial coverage and coordinates payment plans.
    • Prints and presents treatment plans to patients.
  • Ensures strict compliance with University and professional policies/procedures.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments/dental equipment.
  • Greets patients and walk them to the dental operatories.
  • Measures vitals and blood sugar when needed.
  • Participates in team meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited dental assistant training program.
    • Substitution: One year of dental care experience may substitute for graduation from an accredited dental assistant training program.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • One year of dental care experience.
  • Speaks one of the following languages: Dari, Farsi, Ukrainian, Russian, Arabic, Swahili.
  • Experience working with underserved populations.
  • Prior electronic dental and/or health record system experience, this includes student externship.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPR certification by date of hire.
  • Must be willing and able to speak another language in addition to English on a daily basis to communicate clinical terminology.
  • Must be willing and able to remain credentialed and ensure credentialing materials stay current.
  • Must be willing and able to work weekends as needed for promotional events.
  • Must be willing and able to work in patient care environment with some exposure to biological hazards and infectious diseases.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $37,824 to $43,877 / year @ 1.0 FTE.
